ADAS Warning Indicators: An Inspection Conversation, Not a Diagnosis
A warning deserves attention, but responsible communication requires a clear boundary between observation and diagnosis.
How inspectors can document and communicate an ADAS warning without overstating what the indicator proves.
An ADAS-related warning indicates that the vehicle has detected or reported a condition involving one or more systems. By itself, the indicator does not establish the root cause, the severity of the condition, or the repair that may be required. Voltage conditions, impact damage, sensor obstruction, communication faults, component replacement, software configuration, and other factors may all require qualified investigation.
The appropriate inspection boundary
During a safety inspection, the defensible role is narrower: observe the indicator, document the exact message or symbol when permitted, communicate the observation to the vehicle owner, and recommend appropriate diagnostic follow-up. The inspector should avoid promising that a feature is operational—or unavailable—without supporting information.
Why the distinction matters
Clear language protects the owner and the technician. It keeps an observation from being presented as a completed diagnosis and helps the next qualified facility understand what was actually seen.
That boundary is central to Project VISION: improve awareness and referral quality without turning an annual inspection into an ADAS performance test or replacing vehicle-specific OEM procedures.
