Motion Sensors: Yaw Rate, Acceleration, and Vehicle-State Estimation

How accelerometers and gyroscopes describe motion—and why bias and mounting cannot be ignored.
Accelerometers measure linear acceleration, while gyroscopes measure angular velocity. In vehicle coordinates, yaw rate describes rotation about the vertical axis; pitch and roll describe rotation about the lateral and longitudinal axes. [1][2]
From measurement to state
Motion estimates depend on correct mounting orientation, scale, bias, temperature behavior, filtering, and time alignment. Integrating angular rate or acceleration can estimate changing orientation or motion, but small biases accumulate over time.
System relevance
Yaw rate and acceleration support stability control, localization, trajectory estimation, sensor alignment checks, and fusion. Their value comes from consistency with steering, wheel speed, and other vehicle-state signals—not from one isolated number.
