How a tracking system prevents one-frame detections from becoming permanent objects.
Track management turns a stream of detections into a stable object history. A tentative track is created when an unmatched detection is credible enough. Repeated supporting measurements can confirm it; missed updates increase uncertainty and may eventually cause deletion.
Why lifecycle rules matter
Confirming too quickly creates false tracks from clutter. Confirming too slowly can delay response to a real hazard. Deleting too quickly loses temporarily occluded objects; deleting too slowly fills the scene with stale tracks.
A system-level balance
Lifecycle thresholds should reflect sensor rate, detection probability, occlusion behavior, motion model, scene complexity, and feature risk. Track age, hit/miss history, covariance, class stability, and last update time are all useful evidence.
