UDS: A Structured Language for ECU Diagnostics

How diagnostic sessions, services, responses, and transport layers organize communication with vehicle ECUs.
Unified Diagnostic Services defines data-link-independent diagnostic communication services between a tester and an ECU. Current ISO 14229-1 describes services for reading data and diagnostic information, controlling routines and actuators, managing sessions, and supporting other diagnostic functions. [1]
Requests and responses
A tester sends a service request; the ECU returns a positive response or a negative response code that explains why the request cannot be completed in the current condition. Session state, security access, timing, vehicle preconditions, and transport behavior can all affect the result.
ADAS relevance
Calibration routines, status checks, DTC reading, and configuration actions may use UDS, but a successful service response should be interpreted within the exact OEM workflow. It does not independently prove complete feature performance.
