Vehicle Sensors: Measuring the Environment and the Vehicle Itself

A system-level view of environmental sensors, vehicle-motion sensors, and why measurement quality matters.
ADAS depends on two broad information groups. Environmental sensors—such as camera, radar, and ultrasonic devices—observe the surrounding scene. Vehicle-state sensors measure the vehicle’s own condition and motion, including wheel speed, steering angle, acceleration, and angular rate.
Measurements are not ground truth
Every sensor has range, resolution, latency, noise, field-of-view, environmental, and mounting limitations. A measurement should therefore be interpreted with its timestamp, coordinate frame, uncertainty, and operating context.
Why fusion exists
Different sensing principles can provide complementary evidence. Sensor fusion can improve coverage, reliability, or estimation quality, but only when engineers account for alignment, timing, association, and uncertainty. [2]
