Why Basic ADAS Health Awareness Belongs in Vehicle Safety Inspections
Annual inspections already create a trusted safety conversation; ADAS awareness can strengthen that conversation without creating a calibration test.

Annual vehicle inspections create a recurring safety interaction between vehicle owners and trained inspection personnel. Meanwhile, driver-assistance features are increasingly common and can involve cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, electronic control units, networks, software, and vehicle-specific calibration requirements. The gap is awareness—not a new performance test
A conventional inspection should not be converted into a dynamic ADAS performance evaluation. Inspectors should not certify features they are not equipped or authorized to diagnose. A narrower opportunity exists: recognize an ADAS-related warning or observable concern, document it accurately, tell the owner what was observed, and recommend qualified follow-up. [1]
Why the conversation matters
Owners may not understand a warning message, may assume a feature remains fully available, or may not connect recent windshield, collision, alignment, or sensor-area work with the need for vehicle-specific review. An inspection encounter can bring attention to the issue without prescribing the repair.
A limited framework protects the boundary
Project VISION uses five actions: Identify, Observe, Document, Communicate, and Refer. It explicitly excludes diagnosis, calibration, performance certification, and new pass/fail determinations. [4]
The practical value
Better awareness can improve customer communication and the quality of the handoff to a qualified repair or calibration facility. The goal is modest but meaningful: help prevent a visible warning or relevant concern from disappearing between the inspection lane and the next technical decision.
